Marussia sign Maria de Villota

The Marussia Formula One team announced today that they have signed former Daytona 24 Hour driver Maria de Villota as the team's official test driver for the 2012 season. The Spaniard first drove an F1 car last season when she tested the Renault R29. She became the first female racing driver since Katherine Legge in 2005 to drive a modern Formula One car.

Maria will drive for the team at the Abu Dhabi young driver programme later this season. It is not yet known whether or not she will test for the team during Friday practice session's. I believe that it would be great to see her driving the Marussia car during a GrandPrix weekend.

The news that Maria has signed for the team is not just great news for Marussia but it is also fantastic news for Formula One as a sport. In my opinion Marussia would be very foolish not to put Marie in the car during the season as it would bring great exposure for the team.
