McLaren looking to dump Mercedes..Report

So according to reports in a British tabloid newspaper today the McLaren Formula One team are looking for a new engine supplier for next season. The Sun newspaper are reporting that the team who currently receive their engines for free from Mercedes are looking for a cheaper supply of engines as it is thought they will have to pay up to £8 million pounds next season for a supply of Mercedes engine's.

In my opinion, at the moment there is no truth to this rumour. As often is the case in Formula One it is pure speculation and I will believe it when I see it. Ok I'll admit it might be a possibility that the team are looking for a cheaper deal as it is thought that their title sponsor Vodafone are currently conducting a worldwide sponsorship review which could result in the Woking based team losing Vodafone as a sponsor.

However in my opinion, why would McLaren end their partnership with Mercedes when it has been extremely successful. To date the partnership, which began in 1995 has brought McLaren three Driver's championship's and one Constructor's championship along with 75 race wins.

The Sun Reports that the team are looking at re-uniting with the Honda Motor Company who pulled out of Formula One at the end of the 2008 season but who have said that they may be interested in re-entering the sport if the plan to change from 2.4 litre V8 engine's to 1.6 litre V6 turbo charged engine's in 2014 goes ahead.

If it does go ahead I can't see Honda jumped back into F1 as early as next season so it would make sense for McLaren to stick with Mercedes next year and then make the switch to Honda in 2014. This would also make sense for Honda as it would give them a year in which to develop their new engine.

However, as I say in my opinion I can't see McLaren switching supplier's at this stage as they have had an extremely good relationship with the German manufacturer even after the compnay took over the Brawn F1 team in 2010 to become a fully fledged Works F1 team.
